In a world where gender equality is a critical issue, the Church remains steeped in tradition. “They managed to take a ludicrous idea and make it work.
Created Equal has a plot that simply could not happen. A nun wishes to go to a Catholic seminary in order, ultimately, to become a priest. However, the Catholic Church and the popes have been adamant….men, alone, can become priests. So, the woman approaches a law firm in order to sue the Church into accepting her to the seminary because she is being discriminated against by not being allowed in the program. While I could see someone wanting to sue for this right, finding a law firm or a court willing to try tackling the issue in the United States is problematic, as this clearly violates the notion of religious freedom. Lawmakers and judges simply do not nor could they create religious doctrine. However, the filmmakers who made Created Equal have also managed, somehow, to make the story interesting and compelling.
Sister Batista (Edy Ganem) is an unhappy nun. She is feeling unfulfilled in this role and feels that God has called her to be the first Catholic female priest. This seemingly unwinnable case is given to a hot-shot lawyer known for always setting cases without taking them to court. Tom Reilly (Aaron Tveit) plans on convincing the Sister to drop the case or accept a cash settlement. After all, he seems like a cynical guy who is much more interested in making partner at the law firm than actually doing anything else. However, something unusual happens…over time, Sister Batista wins him over and convinces him that they might just be able to win the case. Up against them is a lawyer and priest (Lou Diamond Phillips) as well as a psycho intent on stopping her at any price.
The acting and direction in this film was pretty good…and that made a seemingly ludicrous story actually work. I also liked the local color given to the story by filming it around New Orleans. My only quibble, other than the basic idea, is the big confrontation scene with the would-be killer…it didn’t quite work for me. But solid acting, tension and uniqueness make this an entertaining flick.”

A little more than 12 minutes in and seems to be more of a case on creation and biology unto Jesus and the church flowing from a God revealed by Jesus as a father the simple truth if it is important to the film makers who knows 75 minutes to go
Wonderful movie! A lot to say of course…, but what impressed me most (as a woman) was when she mentioned about Joan d'Arc – I had tears in my eyes. Born and raised in the eastern Europe (Romania) I never thought about any difference in value between women and men. I was very, very surprised to learn about this after crossing the ocean to the N. America – unbelievable!
Go elsewhere, little miss, "it's all about me." Just as in the Holy Bible, in the Catholic Ecclesia, women cannot be priests. For those who are true servants, there are so many ways to be of service. Attempts to destroy the institution established by the Christ are works of the children of darkness.

It's SHOCKING to me that the Clergy of the Catholic Church does not know why woman can't be priests! During a woman's menstrual cycle she is considered UNCLEAN and not fit to be on the Alter of God. Muslims have similar and more stringent rules.
I hope Catholics aren't really this ignorant of the Bible. One of the main arguments of the defense was that the Bible doesn't say that women should not be Pastors/Priests i.e. leaders of the church, but 1 Timothy 2 12-14 spells it out pretty well.

It's bad anough they are made Ministers of the Eucharist without being strenously selected… I know of some that are downright covertly nasty and they give out Holy Communion (Eucharist)! Having GOOD NUNS hand out the Eucharist is wonderful! IF they ever have women Priests, I will leave the Catholic Church and so too, will many others!

As a little girl I know i would have felt more comfortable going into a confessional box to confess my sins to a woman priest than a man priest, men are already intimidating because its harder to confess anything to your dad than it is your mom, as an adult i feel the same, and I'm not at all someone who agrees with women gender crap other than the priest situation.

Great movie. I am a female ordinate in a reformed church but believe me it is still a 'battle', but God. By God's grace I serve His church with the gifts He has given me and the title doesn't matter. If God can use a donkey…. just saying. Be faithful in your calling, and learn to serve the Lord and His church without a title. That is freedom!
After watching this and reading some comments it amazes me how many do not know Scripture or either do not believe that the Bible is sufficient. The Bible clearly teaches that the role of pastor (priest or elder) is only meant for men. Is it meant for men to make rules governing the church or does the Bible have final authority?
As for the state making rules about how the church operates the constitution is also clear. No law shall be passed prohibiting the practice of religion.
People please read your bibles.

What a nice movie that everyone must watch. Great acting too from the cast especially in deliberation in the court trials. Both counsels were great defending their belief & stands same as the judge.The decision of the judge was correct but even the plaintiff won on this case still the Catholic church has the final decision whether they will accept women to enter the seminary to become a priest.
It only shows that our judicial system has no control over the Catholic church teachings & beliefs.
However she can still serve God even she will not become a priest.
I just smiled coz the counsel proved that he's a good lawyer even he was known for not defending any cases. 😊
Am I wrong or are they not allowing women to be priest now? I believe the Catholic Church has way too much power, it has been that way since the Catholic Church was established. And why not let women be priests , they couldn’t do a worse job than the men do. Maybe there wouldn’t be as much sexual misconduct. God did make men and women to be partners so they could have children, not to molest children. OK, sorry enough dissing the Catholic Church. I know there are lots and lots of really good Catholic people and abuse can happen anywhere by anyone not just Catholics. But I do feel that if you have a calling from God that you should be allowed to follow it, excellent movie. I love Lou diamond Phillips. He is such a good actor. Who's the creep with the camera stalking the girl? Is he acting on behalf of the church or a phycopath? How come he knows where she is all the time? Is it legal to walk into buildings & take photos of offices & people – are they're no security cameras or staff ID required? Given that the church has been run by men since it began & the abuse by the church to women & children and covering it up world wide – why should'nt they include women? Even if women were allowed into a seminary and complete the time – they still have to be ordained at the end. Can the law enforce the church to do it. They can send her to the middle of a jungle if they want.
